Eye Bags : Blepharoplasty

The drooping of the upper eyelids is part of the facial ageing process. It can manifest itself as excess skin, excess fat, or both, on the upper and lower eyelids.

This has anatomical as well as functional implications. The most frequent symptoms resulting from this condition are:

  • Sagging of the skin above the eyelid causing wrinkles in the periocular area.
  • Restriction of the visual field, interfering with the quality of vision.
  • Feeling of heaviness and fatigue.

What is the Solution?

The solution for the excessive drooping of the upper eyelids is the remodelling of the tissues by means of surgery called BLEPHAROPLASTY.

Which patients are candidates for blepharoplasty surgery?

The aim of this surgery is to obtain a natural and long-lasting result in both men and women, respecting the safety margins.

Therefore, before proposing a surgical intervention, we must study the patient's facial morphology on an individual basis. No two faces are the same and, therefore, in the hands of a qualified professional, no two surgeries will ever be the same.

What is the process like?

It is an outpatient surgery, i.e:

  • No general anaesthesia is required.
  • No hospital admission is required.

The steps to follow in the case of a patient who is a candidate for blepharoplasty are:

1st Individual assessment in consultation.

2nd Basic preoperative study: analysis and simple chest X-ray.

3º Surgery.

4th check-ups: one after 24-48 hours to confirm the satisfactory result of the surgery and another after 10-14 days to remove the stitches.

What is blepharoplasty surgery like?

The surgical team consists of one or two ophthalmic eyelid surgeons, an anaesthetist, a nursing team and assistants.

The anaesthesia chosen will be local and, if the patient wishes, we will use mild sedation to make the patient's stay in the operating theatre as comfortable as possible.

The duration of the surgery will be between one and two hours, depending on the case.

At the end of the surgery, stitches will be placed and will be removed after 10-14 days. The scar from the stitches will be hidden in the crease that the upper eyelid naturally produces.

During the two weeks of immediate post-operative recovery, the patient can lead a restful life and resume his or her daily activities, avoiding actions that could jeopardise the recent surgery.

After the first few weeks, the patient can return to a normal life without restrictions.
