They are semi-rigid lenses, very comfortable, larger than normal lenses that rest on the sclera and not on the cornea.
Questions and answers about sclare lenses
Can I buy scleral lenses online?
In principle no, as they are personalised, and a detailed study with a corneal topographer and state-of-the-art software is necessary in order to be able to manufacture the lens to your needs, in our clinic in Fuengirola, we will do all the fitting for you.
How should we put them on and take them off?
In our clinic we will instruct you about this. We will use suction cups that are specially designed for this task.
What are the indications?
It is especially indicated for patients with corneal problems, since, as has been indicated, these lenses do not rest on the cornea, and leave an aqueous chamber between the eye and the inner face of the lens. This system improves visual acuity in irregular corneas and reduces pain and discomfort in pathological corneas.
It is therefore indicated in pathologies such as keratoconuscorneal leukomas, corneal transplant recipients, complicated post-refractive surgery, corneal trauma and severe dry eye such as Sjögren's syndrome.
They play a palliative role in these pathologies, the pain disappears automatically and with this, a considerable improvement in the patient's quality of life is achieved"'.
It is also indicated for patients who cannot tolerate conventional contact lenses.
How long does a scleral lens usually last?
Under normal conditions it lasts between one year and one and two years, depending on how carefully we treat it.
If I can't tolerate soft contact lenses, can I wear them?
It is especially indicated for this type of patient, as they do not rest on the cornea and are very well tolerated.
Do I need to take any special precautions?
Never sleep with your lenses in. Lenses should be cleaned daily. If the eye becomes red, vision decreases or starts to hurt, as with any contact lens, do not use them and consult an ophthalmologist.
