What is ocular ultrasound?
The ocular ultrasound is a diagnostic test by means of which images of the eye are obtained by placing a probe on the eyelids or the eye. It uses ultrasound, and is a harmless technique that does not use ionising radiation, with excellent anatomical resolution, obtaining information in real time.
Indications for ocular ultrasound
It is particularly suitable for study of the eyeball when the eye's media are not transparent, such as a vitreous bleed or a very advanced cataract that does not allow us to see the retina.Diagnosis and follow-up of intraocular tumours.
How is ocular ultrasound performed?
The ocular ultrasound is a comfortable and dynamic technique. The ophthalmologist rests a probe on the patient's eyelids and moves it in various directions to study the back of the eye. It is fast and gets immediate results.
What are the risks of eye ultrasound?
Eye ultrasound is safe unless the eye is open due to a recent injury, which would require severe trauma.
