What is OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)?

The OCT is a very useful tool for the diagnosis, control and monitoring of the main pathologies of the retina and macula.

Although OCT is also used for the study of the anterior segment and papilla in glaucoma, the retina remains its main application. OCT is able to measure the thickness of the retina. This is particularly useful for assessing the treatment of macular oedema or, for example, the resolution of central serous choroidopathy. Macular thickness measurement has been found to be highly reproducible, both by different observers and at successive visits. OCT is very useful in the study of retinal alterations, both in the vitreoretinal interface and in the intraretinal region. The main pathologies of the macular area that can be studied with OCT are the following:

  • Epiretinal membranes.
  • Macular holes.
  • Lamellar macular holes and pseudoholes.
  • Macular oedema of any aetiology.
  • Age-related macular degeneration.
  • Central serous choroidopathy.
