In the Dr. Nebro Ophthalmology Clinic, in Fuengirola, we carry out ocular ultrasound as a diagnostic test to examine the internal structures of the eye using ultrasound. It is a particularly useful technique when it is not possible to visualise the fundus clearly using conventional examination methods.

An ocular ultrasound provides real-time information about the eyeball and is extremely helpful in patients with advanced cataracts, vitreous haemorrhages, opacities of the ocular media, suspected retinal detachment, ocular trauma or intraocular injuries.

What is ocular ultrasound?

The ocular ultrasound It is a diagnostic test that uses ultrasound to produce images of the inside of the eye. Unlike other light-based ophthalmic tests, it can be useful even when the eye’s media are not transparent.

During the examination, the ophthalmologist places a probe on the closed eyelid or on the surface of the eye, as appropriate, and moves it gently to examine the internal structures of the eye. It is a quick, non-invasive test that is well tolerated.

Indications for ocular ultrasound

An ocular ultrasound is particularly recommended when the retina or the interior of the eye cannot be seen clearly during a routine examination. Some of the most common indications for this procedure are:

Advanced cataracts

When a cataract is very dense, it can obstruct the view of the retina. In such cases, an ocular ultrasound scan enables the posterior segment of the eye to be assessed before considering cataract surgery or completing the ophthalmological examination.

Vitreous haemorrhage

The presence of blood in the vitreous may make it difficult or impossible to examine the fundus. An ocular ultrasound helps to determine whether there are any associated abnormalities, such as traction, retinal lesions or a suspected retinal detachment.

Retinal detachment

In certain patients, particularly where opacities prevent a view of the fundus, an ultrasound scan can provide important information when a retinal detachment is suspected.

Intraocular injuries or tumours

Ocular ultrasound can be useful for assessing, measuring and monitoring certain intraocular lesions. The indication will always depend on the results of the ophthalmological examination and the doctor’s judgement.

Eye trauma

Following an eye injury, it may be necessary to examine the inside of the eyeball. Ultrasound can provide useful information in certain cases, provided there is no suspicion of an open eye wound.

AB FLEX DGH technology for ocular ultrasound

At the Dr Nebro Eye Clinic, we have the AB FLEX DGH ocular ultrasound scanner, an ophthalmic ultrasound platform that enables ultrasound examinations to be carried out to visualise the interior of the eye and obtain intraocular measurements.

DGH’s Scanmate Flex system is designed for ophthalmic applications and enables the interior of the eye to be visualised using ultrasound, as well as performing measurements such as axial length to calculate the power of intraocular lenses.

This technology is particularly useful in cases where examination using other optical methods may be limited by dense cataracts, blood or other opacities. The B-scan allows images of the posterior segment to be obtained even when optical clarity is compromised.

How is ocular ultrasound performed?

The ocular ultrasound  is a comfortable and dynamic technique. The ophthalmologist rests a probe on the patient's eyelids and moves it in various directions to study the back of the eye. It is fast and gets immediate results.

What are the risks of eye ultrasound?

Eye ultrasound is safe unless the eye is open due to a recent injury, which would require severe trauma.
