the case of ophthalmologists, we are faced with the dilemma of assessing whether or not the patient suffers from a neurological disorder.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The patient is looking for a simple answer to his problem, \"I see double\", but listing the list of possible causes without going into further details, even in a simple way, is not usually the most reassuring for most patients.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-06c79b1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"06c79b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is diplopia or double vision?\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-93d6c9c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"93d6c9c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We call <strong>diplopia<\/strong> any visual disturbance that manifests itself as double vision, whether or not it affects the entire visual field, whether it follows lines, e.g. horizontal lines, or whether it occurs in one or both eyes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, when we are asked about double vision and about what it may be, we must respond calmly, conveying the need for a thorough review until we find the problem and solve it if it exists.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f7a2199 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f7a2199\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Types of double vision\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8d2f90e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8d2f90e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three most common types of diplopia are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0a2690 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e0a2690\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Double monocular vision\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41234a7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"41234a7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It affects only one eye and usually indicates a structural problem in the eye, and rarely corresponds to a neurological disorder.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Double vision is only perceived with the affected eye open, so it may be the patient himself who tells us, as soon as he sees us, that \"with one eye I can see double\".<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9328ec9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9328ec9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\nDouble binocular vision<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ce6be85 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ce6be85\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It affects both eyes and disappears when either eye is closed.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d6d88f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5d6d88f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Physiological double vision<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab397ad elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab397ad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, what we see double are objects out of focus in the background of the visual field. If we add to this the fact that the brain learns to compensate for this visual alteration quite well, we could detect this type of diplopia in an examination motivated by another independent symptomatology. There are times when patients do comment that <\/span><b>\"I see double and blurred\".<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c86acc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0c86acc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Is it serious? When to see a professional\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f68b8ba elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f68b8ba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>diplopia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells us that there is a problem and we need to find it in order to offer treatment. Diagnosis is not always straightforward, as we must look for problems in the structure of the eye to see if it is a neurological problem or a muscular disease. <\/span><b>Each assessment usually requires a specialised diagnostic test.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the seriousness of some of the possible diagnoses, we recommend that you visit your ophthalmologist or, failing that, the emergency department when symptoms begin, as long as you do not have a previous diagnosis. The typical example: some migraines. Also go if the pattern of these episodes of diplopia changes at any time, or if they recur after treatment.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-554d89e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"554d89e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Treatment of diploia<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fd975a6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fd975a6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>treatment of diplopia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depends on where the cause of the double vision lies and may not be the responsibility of the ophthalmologist or may require joint work between different medical specialties.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the cause of diplopia is damage to one or both optic nerves, the patient may have diabetes or multiple sclerosis. Tumours cannot be ruled out, although they are less frequent. It is necessary to work closely with other medical specialists who also carry the patient.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the cause of double vision is located in the brain, we are faced with diagnoses as diverse as cerebral hypertension, aneurysms or tumours, without ruling out some migraines. In these cases, it is usual to refer the patient to another specialist, the neurologist or neurosurgeon, or to work together.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the origin of the diplopia is a structural problem of the eye, then it is up to the ophthalmologist to treat it with vision therapy, corrective prisms or, if that does not work, surgery.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When double vision is caused by muscular problems, we may be dealing with a case of strabismus or a muscle weakened by a neurological problem. Treatment may consist of the use of lenses or contact lenses to improve vision or, depending on the case, surgery.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-599ea71 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"599ea71\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>Vision or diplopia may be a sign of something serious.
